STATEMENT:
“An ecological system is a structural and functional “whole” including organism and their habitats, in which processes of biological material and energy exchange go on, to support functioning on the self contained system. Besides a wide variety of natural ecosystems, humans can create and recreate different artificial systems. An artificial system design to support the existence of certain species that dictates the qualitative specificity of all processes in the system can be termed to these species life support system.” *
QUESTION:
How the knowledge acquired during the past 40 years in matter of experimenting with closed ecological systems, can be adapted as enclosed structures - for civil use, educational, and leisure porpoises, following the new tendencies in architecture?

OBJECTIVES:
This thesis proposal aims to develop an artificial environment called Paludarium. A paludarium is a type of vivarium that incorporates both terrestrial and aquatic elements. Paludariums usually consist of an enclosed container in which organisms specific to the biome being simulated are kept, usually a rain forest or swamp environment. It also can be seen as an aquarium interconnected with a terrarium, having both the underwater area as well as the shore. They may be maintained for purely aesthetic reasons, or for scientific or horticultural purposes. The word “paludarium” comes from the Latin word “paludal” meaning marshes or swamps and “-arium” which means an enclosed container. It’s worldwide known that the Reptiles are Polikilthermic life forms, in other words, they are cold blooded, so the need a lot of light to warm up their bodies. This light design can be also used in another simultaneous way: the project can be used also as a Sun House (it is proved by science that light has an influence in the behavior or mood of the individuals), for example in winter, when the days are shorter and the nights arelonger, there’s not so much natural light in the environment. This building supplies fresh light to its visitors.

OBJECT OF STUDY:
For this proposal, existing examples of similar attempts are useful as object of studies, to understand the way they work. Some of these are experiments took part in U.S.A and in the Former Soviet Union, willing to be able to develop and create closed ecological systems. Such systems are scientifically interesting and can potentially serve as a life support system during space flights, in space stations or space habitats.
